It Must Have Been

Was it her hair?

Her wide nose

oil filled pores

or her chubby cheeks.

Was it the way her braids fell?

Swooped like mine to the side

every synthetic strand strand

spliced with organic DNA

Was it her big lips?

Showcasing all her secrets

Through her teeth and open diaphragm

Exhausted from defending her identity

apart from the independent black woman.

It must have been the color of her skin

Melanin shining like the sun

Hitting the stain glassed windows of the pews

Each pore filled with ambition

With each wrinkle and line like the ones on their backs.

It must have been me

with the same wide nose

oil filled pores

and chubby cheeks.
